Fly Of The Month

August 2000
The Rubber Candy

By Frank Abbate

The Rubber Candy is another creation of Bob Popovics and is a silicone version of the epoxy surf candy. It’s a durable fly and a real fish catcher.

Materials

Hook Eagle Claw 254 or Tiemco 800
Thread Fine Mono
Tail White bucktail, pearl flashabou, white Ostrich Herl
Body White bucktail, pearl flashabou, white Ostrich Herl
Wing Peacock Herl
Eyes Silver stick-on

Tying Instructions

1 Begin by tying in a small bunch of bucktail at the bend of the hook, followed by some pearl flashabou and then about 10 to 15 strands of Ostrich Herl.
2 Wrap a length of estaz, beginning at the eye of the hook back to the tail material and forward to the eye again. Trim the estaz to a nice body taper so that the peacock herl will lay back nicely.
3 Tie in about 10 strands of peacock herl at the eye of the hook. Tie off.
4 Coat the fly with silicone, add the eyes and after it dries give it a very light second coat. Let dry over night.
