Fly Of The Month

February 2001
Mylar Minnow

By Frank Abbate

The Mylar minnow is a small fly that catches big fish. It's a fly that had its birth as a fly created by the late Matty Vinceguera, called the Salty Beady Eye. This is an easy fly to tie and is composed of nothing more than mylar tubing, prism eye and epoxy. I usually tie this fly in both size 2 and 1/0

Materials

Hook 34007 No. 2
Overbody Fine silver / pearlescent mylar tubing
Thread Clear fine monofilament
Eyes No. 2 witchcraft eyes
Adhesive 5 minute epoxy
Optional Green permanent maker, ultra fine green glitter

Tying Instructions

1 Place a hook in the vice and cut a piece of silver mylar tubing about 4 inches long.
2 Fold the tubing in half to find the center and make a hole in the tubing at that point.
3 Tie on some mono thread right behind the eye of the hook
4 Pierce the hole made in the tubing with the hook eye
5 Figure eight the thread around the tubing, until it's secure and work the thread back to the bend of the hook
6 Fold the top strand back to the bend and tie down; then take the bottom strand, fold back and tie down.
7 Clip the tail to make it about 1/2" to an inch
8 Mix some epoxy and fill the cavity created by the tubing and let dry
