Fly Of The Month

May 2001
The Gartside Gurgler

By Frank Abbate

The Gartside Gurgler is a great fly to use when you need a quiet slider. It moves water, especially when there is a little current. Be sure to sign up for the 2001 Salties Conclave June 8-10, where you can meet Jack Gartside in person.

Materials

Hook 34011 - 1/0
Thread White Flat waxed nylon
Body Closed cell fly foam
Flash Krystal Flash, long strand Estaz
Tail Bucktail

Tying Instructions

1 Tie in thread behind the hook eye and make a neat foundation of thread. Stop at the bend of the hook.
2 Cut a small bunch of bucktail and tie in at the bend. The bucktail should be about 1 1/2 times the length of the hook shank. Cut a few strands of Krystal Flash and tie on top.
3 Cut a strip of foam approximately 1/2 inch in width and about two inches in length.
4 Bring your thread to the eye of the hook and place the foam right behind the hook eye. Tie down the length of the foam to the bend of the hook, leaving the tag end of the foam extending beyond the bend.
5 Cut a length of Estaz about two - three inches.
6 Tie in the Estaz at the bend of the hook and wrap forward to the eye of the hook and tie off.
7 Now grab the tag end of the foam and pull forward over the Estaz to behind the eye of the hook and secure tightly.
8 Cut the overhanging excess of foam but leave a hood of foam about 1/4 inch over the hook eye. Add cement to the wraps.
