The plan is to meet several local surf fishermen who are members of the Fisherman's Conservation Association. These anglers will provide a brief overview of the local area and current fishing conditions. The anglers from the FCA will be spin/plug casting with large Pencil Poppers. These anglers will be assisting fly anglers with attracting the bluefish along the flat. There are no bathroom facilities at the meeting site. This trip is for 2010 MEMBERS AND THEIR GUESTS ONLY.
RSVP: Please email or call the Trip Coordinator
SUGGESTED ARRIVAL TIME: We should all arrive at Michael's Bait & Tackle, located at 187 Mansion Ave, Staten Island, NY 10308 at 4:45 AM (NOTICE: THIS IS ONLY THE MEETING POINT. THE ACTUAL FISHING DESTINATION IS WITHIN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD APPROXIMATELY 1.5 miles AWAY. GOAL IS TO CARPOOL TO THE FISHING DESTINATION. PARKING IS FOR 5-8 VEHICLES AT FISHING DESTINATION. WE WILL FIND PLENTY OF PARKING AT THE ADDRESS ABOVE.

CELL NUMBER: (646) 286-4400
TARGET FISH: Big gator bluefish and striped bass
EQUIPMENT: 9-10wt. rods are suggested with floating lines. This trip is scheduled around outgoing tide. Goal is to wade fish a wide open flat at the mouth of Great Kills Harbor. This flat typically holds bluefish and some striped bass on the outgoing tide. The most effective methods of fly fishing in this area is using a floating line. I do suggest #47lb or #65 lb single stand wire - 3-5 inches of wire for a bite guard.
FLIES: The largest type of foam popper you can throw. The color of the popper typically does not matter - but White, Yellow or Chartreuse work well. In addition- I would also be prepared with various styles of clouser minnows in typical Northeast color schemes and larger streamer - bunker type flies. Bait fish in this area will be predominantly larger adult bunker. |

The Salty Flyrodders of New York will conduct fly tying meetings twice monthly on Friday evenings at 7pm in Massapequa Park (meet at 6:30pm to set up). The first meeting is Friday February 5th. There is no cost to Saltys who's membership is current. Non-members can attend for $20 and if you decide to join the club, your fee will be applied to your membership dues. The format will be collaborative in nature. That is to say, the group will decide what patterns to tie that evening and may plan for patterns in future meetings. Each attendee will be offered the opportunity to demonstrate their favorite pattern and have the group follow along. Refreshments will be available for the first meeting so don't miss out on the coffee and donut holes!! For more information, please contact Mike Wolyniec at

Materials:
Hook: Standard length hook (Mustad 34007, Tiemo 811S)
base/tail: 2 ˝” – 3” long neck hackle
body: reverse tied buck tail*
tail: saddle hackle: extend 3” beyond neck hackle
flash: optional
belly: small, sparse buck tail*
wing: small, sparse buck tail*
Belly flash: light color angel hair, GSS, wing & flash, or similar
Wing flash: contrasting color of angel hair, GSS, wing & flash
Cement: Dave’s flexament
Eyes: jungle cock, (optional)
* It’s a good idea to use buck tail from the base of the tail and allow it to splay as you tighten your thread wraps since the intention is to build bulk without adding weight weight - hollow fleye style.
Tying Instructions
|
|
1. Apply thread at mid-shank and tie in a single neck hackle so it lays flat and on top of the shank and is curled up. Dub in a little bit of the fluffy por tion you have removed to clear the stem before setting the feather to create a soft base. This helps prevent the feather from rolling.
|
2. Advance thread toward the hook eye +/- 1/4” beyond base of hackle feather and reverse tie in a sparse bunch of buck tail.
|
3. Fold buck tail back over the tail feather and tie down. The tip of the buck tail should end just shy of the hackle tip and should splay slightly to
create the bulk of the body and support the saddle hackle tail.
|
4. Advance thread another 1/4” and tie in 5 thin saddle
hackles so that they extend +/- 3” beyond the neck hackle.
|
5. Tie in two additional SPARSE bunches of buck tail: one on the bottom of the hook, extending to the hook point (pink in picture) and one on
top just beyond the tip of the neck hackle base (brown in picture). Again
splay the buck tail to build some bulk in the shape of the fly.

|
6. Reverse tie contrasting colors of angel hair/GSS/wing & flash, finish and tie off. Apply flexament lightly with side of bodkin to side of ange hair - like glaze on a donut. Add eyes of choice and you’re done.
|
Note: The material colors in the demo were picked arbitrarily byDavid. This is the same pattern tied on a Tiemco SP 600 using white hackle, white bucktail, pearl wing & flash and herring colored Gartside secret stuff (GSS).
